Get into Alicia’s new self titled album! The album is getting rave reviews from critics.

Alicia is one of her most musically engaging LPs, with production from Mark Ronson, Sampha, Tricky Stewart, and her husband, Swizz Beatz, among other reliable hands.” – Rolling Stone

Keys reclaims most of her usual composure on “Alicia,” but it’s often tinged with ambivalence, even in love songs. The music often hollows itself out around her, opening deep bass chasms or surrounding sparse instrumentation with echoey voids.” – NY Times

Alicia gave one of the most powerful performances of the night at the BET Awards last night. She delivered the first live performance of her heartbreaking new song, “Perfect Way to Die” at the 2020 BET Awards on Sunday, and it had fans feeling emotional.

Whether it’s spiritual, or the blues, jazz, or hip-hop, music has always been the voice of the Black experience. It speaks to our resilience, our resistance, and even in the messiest of circumstances we find melody,” BET Awards host Amanda Seales began as she introduced Keys’ performance. “Tonight, as we revel in Black music, we must also honor the lives of those who have brought us to this moment of consciousness.

Alicia Keys initially wrote “Perfect Way to Die” with the deaths of Michael Brown and Sandra Bland in mind, but her performance at the BET Awards paid tribute to many others who tragically lost their lives, including George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery.

On a brisk February morning, Alicia Keys, full of effervescence, entered NPR through the loading dock wearing a canary yellow faux fur coat. During our ride to the fourth floor, she joked about how she hadn’t been invited to play at the Tiny Desk. That, of course, wasn’t exactly true. We worked on and off for years to make this moment happen, and I can say wholeheartedly that it was worth the wait.

Alicia Keys has an aura that you can sense the second she enters a room, or in my case, an elevator. She radiates compassion and kindness. This spirit is the key to Keys’s songwriting, which is rooted in introspection and mindfulness.

As she approached her piano, a bit surprised at the amount of people in the room, she smiled and remarked over her shoulder, “Gee, the Tiny Desk is tiny!” She kicked off the set with an uncanny ode to combat the darkness of this moment in American history: “Show Me Love,” a single she released in 2019. No one could have predicted then how much her lyrics and musical healing would be crucial during this emotionally fraught time of unprecedented political and racial unrest, heightened by three months of quarantine due to a global pandemic.

How quickly did the idea to incorporate Boyz II Men into Alicia’s intro come together? They were there to perform with Tyler, the Creator. At that late point you have to work with what you’ve got, you can’t bring someone else in, right?

No. That we couldn’t have done. Alicia was on her way to the stage. It was probably noon, maybe 12:30 p.m. I took her aside and said I have some terrible news, but I have to tell you that you need to keep your focus on what we’re doing here and let us come to you with some thoughts. She was obviously visibly shaken by [the news]. Then we went on with the dress [rehearsal]. We started coming up with a plan and it was basically [Grammy show executives] David Wild, Ben Winston, Garry Hood, who’s my lead stage manager, and myself, and we went into her dressing room. Alicia and I primarily were thinking about songs and we went a little gospel. I never said it, but I was thinking about Boyz II Men. I left and about five minutes later I got a call from one of her people saying, “Hey, can we find Boyz II Men to do “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye to Yesterday.” We found them and they went into her dressing room. It was about 15 minutes before showtime. They spent probably 10 minutes working it out and then it was there.

The state of mind at this year’s Global Citizen Festival, held on Saturday, took a very local spin thanks to hometown girl Alicia Keys.

When you’re in the heart of New York City — in the middle of the Great Lawn of Central Park, on the perfect Indian summer evening — it’s going to be hard to beat Keys doing her piano-woman take on Billy Joel’s “New York State of Mind” that segued into her Jay-Z-free version of “Empire State of Mind.”

With iconic images of New York flashing on the video screen behind her, Keys sang about the “concrete jungle where dreams are made of,” as everybody on the Great Lawn “put one hand in the air for the big city.” As the energy seemed to lift to the Manhattan sky above it all, stretching out to the top of the Empire State Building and beyond, it was the kind of pinch-me moment that gave you straight-up chills.

It’s got to rank with one of the most memorable moments at the Global Citizen Festival since it was first held at Central Park in 2012. And that’s saying a lot considering Keys — in her third appearance at the event, which raises awareness for global issues such as poverty, education and the environment — wasn’t even the headliner.
